Skincare for Neck Wrinkles or Turkey Neck

Botox and fillers can sometimes hide the signs of aging. But one dead giveaway that someone is older than they might appear is their neck.

There don’t seem to be too many solutions to the dreaded turkey neck, other than plastic surgery. Unfortunately many of us can’t afford it and even if we can, it’s invasive and has a long recovery time. Is there anything that can be done about an aging neck?

What causes neck wrinkles or turkey neck?

An aging neck is unattractive to most people. And there are a variety of factors, both internal and external that cause it. Just getting older is a huge factor because as we age, our skin loses elasticity. That, combined with normal movement will cause neck wrinkles at some point.

Are you looking at a phone or computer screen right now? If you’re looking down, there’s a good chance your neck is crinkled. Over time, this position will cause permanent wrinkles. Lift that phone and straighten your neck!

Unfortunately, some of us are born to inherit a pretty severe turkey neck. Genetics, combined with facial structure, such as a weak or double chin, may lead to a sagging neck earlier rather than later. And even those with a stronger jawline may eventually someday experience those deep neck folds.

External factors play a role as well. Exposure to the sun and pollution can damage the skin over time, causing it to stretch and sag. Lack of moisture also has an effect, so even younger people should be applying products, especially sunscreen, to help slow down future neck wrinkles.

Treatment for an Aging Neck

There are some cosmetic treatments available through dermatologists, estheticians, and even tools you can use at home that may help with neck folds.

Cosmetic treatments include:

  • Neck lift

  • Injectable dermal fillers

  • Botox or other neurotoxins

  • Chemical peels

  • Photodynamic therapy

  • Laser treatments and pulsed light

  • Radiofrequency

  • And more!

Let’s examine a few of these treatments and how they work.

Neck Lift

A neck lift is a surgical procedure. It isn’t as involved as a full facelift, but they are often done together for optimal results. A neck lift must be performed by a surgeon. It involves a small incision behind each ear and sometimes under the chin. The doctor will then tighten neck muscles and remove excess skin through the incisions. Recovery time takes about two weeks and results are permanent.

Chemical Peel

Chemical peels can also help treat loose neck skin. It works by removing the very top layers of skin by applying a chemical solution. The skin underneath is newer and fresher, therefore less wrinkled. The procedure is usually done in a doctor’s office or a clinic. One of the benefits is that the chemical peel will also treat discolored skin, scars, and other wrinkles all in one. Results are temporary and recovery takes anywhere from one day to two weeks.

Botox

Neck botox has been gaining in popularity as a way to combat turkey neck. It works by blocking the chemical signals from nerves that tell muscles to contract, basically freezing them into position. This makes the skin appear smoother.

One neck botox procedure is called the Nefertiti Lift.  It’s named after Queen Nefertiti, who is often portrayed as a woman with a long neck and firm jaw. The lift targets the long muscles that run from the bottom of the face to the collarbone. It’s been shown to be fairly effective. One of the criticisms of this technique is that because of the location of the injections, it affects the appearance of the patient’s smile. Results last for 3 to 4 months.

Skincare Ingredients that May Help Turkey Neck

When it comes down to it, not all of us want (or can afford) medical procedures to help minimize neck wrinkles. There are a lot of products on the market that claim that they might help, but can skincare products eliminate turkey neck?

A double blind clinical trial done in 2020 shows promise for hyaluronic acid serum and antioxidant cream. The goal of the study was to look at the effectiveness and saftey of these products. Participants were given either the product with active ingredients or a placebo. Results showed that the hyaluronic serum blend improved the appearance of the skin on the neck both to the eye and under a microscope.
