When It Comes to Your Skin, You are What You Eat

cover-image

You already know that taking care of your skin will prevent breakouts, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and help you maintain a healthy complexion. But a good skincare routine is simply the tip of the iceberg. It might not be a big surprise, but what you put into your body plays a big role in the health and appearance of your skin.

Diet Affects the Skin

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, there's a powerful link between nutrition and skin health. What you eat will have a huge impact on how your skin looks and feels. It’s probably no surprise, but a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and other nutrient dense foods are great for your skin (and your whole body, actually!). On the other side of the coin, a diet high in processed and sweet foods can contribute to skin problems such as acne, rosacea, and general inflammation.

If you want to keep your skin healthy, it’s important to eat a well balanced diet.

Good Food for Healthy Skin

So what exactly can you eat to be sure you have the best skin possible?  Here are some ideas:

  • Fruits and vegetables: This is kind of a no brainer. Fruits and veggies are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Good choices include berries, citrus fruit, leafy greens, and sweet potatoes.

  • Lean protein such as chicken and fish support healthy skin, hair, and nails.

  • Healthy fats are necessary for maintaining the health and youthful look of your skin. These include avocados, nuts, and olive oil.

  • Drink lots of water!  Staying hydrated is important for healthy, glowing skin. The rule of thumb is to drink eight 8 ounce glasses of water per day. It also helps you to feel fuller so that you don’t eat as much unhealthy food.

  • Gut health is a bit of a buzzword these days, but research has shown that it is important. The microbiome in your gut has a big impact on the health of your skin. Incorporate gut-healthy foods into your diet and take probiotic supplements to support the health of your digestive system.

Don’t get stuck in a rut when it comes to what you eat! Experiment with interesting foods that you’ve never tried. Aim to eat a good variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats to provide your body with the nutrients it needs.

In addition to incorporating these skin-healthy foods into your diet, you want to limit or avoid the foods that can contribute to acne, excessively dry skin, and inflammation. These include:

  • Sugar

  • Processed foods

  • Fried Foods

  • Alcohol

Don’t Forget the Skincare!

A good diet will not only benefit your skin, but your entire body. It will pay off by rewarding you with better health.  If your skin is what you need to put you on the path to better health, that’s a step in the right direction. But don’t skimp on your skincare routine. Be sure to cleanse and moisturize morning and night. And always wear sunscreen during the day!
